After analyzing the effects of green tea and coffee consumption among a large sample of nearly 5,000 diabetic adults, a team of researchers in Japan noted that the risks of premature death were the lowest among study participants who drank both four cups of tea and two cups of coffee every day. Over five years, researchers in Japan provided questionnaires to nearly 5,000 study participants who had signed up for the Fukuoka Diabetes Registry. The questions involved diet and lifestyle topics, investigating how much study participants exercised, smoked, slept and consumed coffee and green tea daily. At the end of the study, 309 of the people had died.

The study found that those who drank a cup of green tea every day had a 15% lower chance of early death, those who drank two to three cups had a 27% lower chance and those who drank four cups had a 40% chance minor to die prematurely death. In the case of coffee, it was observed that drinking one cup a day had a 19% lower chance of death, and those who drank two cups of coffee a day were associated with a 41% lower chance of premature death. Ultimately, the people with the least chance of early death were those who drank four cups of green tea and two cups of coffee every day.

The researchers concluded: “We found that increased consumption of green tea and coffee was significantly associated with reduced all-cause mortality in patients with type 2 diabetes.” They also noted that the findings are responsible for other lifestyle factors, including diet, exercise and other lifestyle choices. “This association remained significant after adjusting for possible confounding factors: the impact of each drink on mortality was independent.” And for some of the health risks of drinking too much coffee, make sure you are aware of the dangerous side effects of drinking too much coffee, according to scientists.
