Congresswoman Liz Cheney has become the latest Republican legislator to suffer a negative reaction from the Republican Party for voting in favor of the impeachment of former President Donald Trump. Cheney kept his vote. “My vote for impeachment was compelled by my oath to the Constitution. Wyoming citizens know that this oath does not bend or yield to politics or partisanship, ” Cheney said in a statement. “I will always fight for Wyoming’s values and defend our Western lifestyle. We have major challenges ahead as we move forward and tackle the disastrous policies of the Biden government. “
The censorship vote came just days after Cheney survived an effort by Trump supporters to expel her from her leadership position in the House. House Republicans voted 145-61 to retain Cheney as chairman of the conference committee. Prior to the state party’s vote, at least a dozen county-level Republican committees passed their own censorship resolutions against Cheney, who already faces at least two opponents in the primaries in 2022 just months after winning a third term with nearly 70% of the votes. At the end of last month, nearly 1,000 people attended a rally led by Rep. Matt Gaetz against Cheney in front of the Wyoming Capitol.
Cheney was one of ten House Republicans who voted in favor of impeachment and several others also suffered a similar setback from members of their own party. “Each of those ten, when they voted, knew in their heads and in their hearts that it was probably a political death sentence.
