The UK may move some coronavirus patients to hotels as hospitals struggle with the new strain

England’s healthcare system can transfer patients to hotels to ease the pressure on hospitals struggling to cope with increased COVID-19 admissions.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock said on Wednesday that the National Health Service is looking at several ways to reduce pressure on hospitals, including transferring patients to hotels when appropriate. Discussions on the subject were first reported by The Guardian.

“We would only do this if it was medically the right thing for someone,” Hancock told Sky News. “In some cases, people need sitting care, they don’t really need to be in a hospital bed.”

Britain already has the deadliest coronavirus outbreak in Europe, with more than 83,000 deaths, and the number of hospital beds occupied by patients with COVID-19 is still increasing. British hospitals in England are treating 55% more cases of COVID-19 than during the first pandemic peak in April.
