Warner did not give companies a deadline to respond. Twitter declined to comment at this point, but a Facebook spokesman told Engadget that he was maintaining “continuous and proactive disclosure for law enforcement” and was responding “quickly” to requests by deleting content, removing accounts and cooperating investigations. We also asked Apple for a comment.
This is not a legally binding request. It can also be difficult for some of the companies to comply. Messaging services like Signal and Telegram have end-to-end encryption that prevents creators from accessing chats, for example.
Still, technology companies may be compelled to respond. Warner is the new chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee – he could lead investigations and other actions in response to the Capitol violation.
