The San Antonio Joint Base sergeant dies from multiple gunshot wounds, officials say

SANTO ANTÓNIO – A sergeant assigned to the US Army Medical Center of Excellence at the San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston Joint Base died of multiple gunshot wounds, according to the JBSA.

Sergeant Jessica Mitchell, a 68E dentistry expert, was pronounced dead at San Antonio University Hospital at about 3 am on Friday, according to JBSA.

The unit was notified by hospital staff that Mitchell, who was on vacation at the time, was the victim of several gunshot wounds. It is not clear what happened that led to her death.

The San Antonio Police Department and the Army’s Criminal Investigation Division are investigating the situation.

Mitchell has been assigned to MEDCoE since August 2019. Prior to that assignment, she served at a JBSA dental clinic since October 2017.

“We are devastated by the tragic loss of Sergeant Jessica Mitchell. Our sincere condolences go out to your family and friends. We are focused on supporting Sergeant Mitchell’s family as well as his soldiers during this extremely difficult period, ”said General Dennis LeMaster, Commander General of MEDCoE.
