Texas Republican Congressman Chip Roy is asking House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to intervene and force Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to apologize for tweeting that Senator Ted Cruz “almost killed me” during the Capitol rebellion.
Roy wrote to Pelosi (D-Calif.) On Thursday that the 31-year-old Democrat, who represents parts of the Bronx and Queens, must apologize.
“[S]he accused Senator Ted Cruz, in essence, of attempted murder, ”wrote Roy.
“As a member of this body who disagreed with ‘objections’ to voters and who publicly expressed my concerns about the events leading up to January 6, it is completely unacceptable behavior for a member of Congress to make this kind of rude accusation against another member of the House or Senate for simply engaging in speeches and debates about voters as they interpreted the Constitution. “
Roy continued, “I ask that you call her to apologize immediately and retract your comments. If the Ocasio-Cortez representative does not apologize immediately, we will be forced to find alternative ways to condemn this unfortunate statement. ”
Spokesmen for Ocasio-Cortez, commonly known as AOC, and Pelosi did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
The avowed “democratic socialist” accused Cruz of being responsible for the violence that interrupted President Biden’s victory certification because the Texan opposed Arizona voters, citing federal court decisions that extended the electoral registration deadline and insisting on a national audit electoral fraud.
She tweeted at Cruz on Thursday after he offered an alliance branch against a possible government crackdown on small investors who were waging war on hedge funds by buying GameStop shares.
AOC wrote: “I am happy to work with Republicans on this issue where there is common ground, but you almost murdered me 3 weeks ago, so you can stay out. Happy to work with almost any other GOP that is not trying to kill me. In the meantime, if you want to help, you can resign. “
Roy did not specify how Republicans can condemn AOC if it does not apologize.
Roy is known for being an independent and outspoken Republican. He scoffed at Pelosi’s new metal detectors outside the Chamber’s chamber, saying, “I will not comply.” He also criticized former President Donald Trump for his pre-riot speech on January 6, saying that “it deserves universal condemnation for clearly what, in my opinion, was objectionable conduct”. But Roy opposed a written impeachment article and did not join 10 House Republicans who voted against Trump.
