At least nine people were injured in New York City on Thursday night, when an “accordion-style” city bus got off the road, hit a barrier and was partially hung on an overpass.
Video posted on social media showed the BX-35 bus looking like it was hanging by a thread while first aid tried to figure out how to deal with the situation in the city’s Bronx neighborhood.
The injured were the driver and at least six passengers, all taken off the bus and transported to a hospital, New York’s WNBC-TV reported. The extent of his injuries was not immediately known.
Firefighters gave the total number of injured as nine, but it was unclear whether the total was strictly for the bus occupants or included other people who were on the scene.
FLORIDA CARJACKING TAKES INTERSTATE 95 FRONT CAUSE, AT LEAST 3 DEATHS: REPORT
Police said the accident could have resulted from a brake failure or the driver having trouble turning, New York’s WCBS-TV reported.
Respondents were working to ensure that the bus’s fuel and other hazardous materials were safe before proceeding to remove the bus, said FDNY acting battalion chief Steven Moore in an Instagram post.
The bus was a so-called “articulated” vehicle, which includes a rubber-like “accordion-style” section that helps increase the capacity of the bus and allows the longest bus driver to make the turns more easily. This middle section had a significant tear in photos and videos posted online.
The photos showed the front end of the bus hanging off the overpass, perpendicular to the road below, while the rear of the bus remained above, in a horizontal position.

New York Fire Department officials posted images on Friday, suggesting that early respondents were still working on the site overnight.
The accident caused temporary road closures west of the Cross Bronx expressway in the Major Deegan expressway area, WCBS Radio reported.
