The new design of the Apple iMac that leaked in 2021 is impressive (but a little predictable)

If there’s an Apple product that needs a new coat of ink, it’s the iMac. Last refurbished centuries ago (in 2012), the all-in-one desktop is currently featuring one of Apple’s oldest product designs. But a new leak revealed that the iMac may have a very colorful update in 2021.

Not only will the 2021 iMac supposedly feature a completely new design, it will also come in five new shades. And judging by the new 3D renderers in the line (below), our best computer for graphic design is about to look much more vibrant.

According to Apple’s favorite pourer, Jon Prosser, the 2021 iMac will come in black, white, green, blue and rose gold. Recent rumors have suggested that the new iMac will feature thinner bezels and a thinner overall body (similar to Apple’s) Pro XDR Display), and Prosser’s renderings show a straighter and narrower profile.

So, those colors. The most obvious thing to note about pastel shades is that they were taken directly from the 2020 iPad Air. The change suggests that Apple is moving to consolidate its product color schemes (although, if that is the case, it is strange that the company did not choose to launch the iPhone 12 in the same soft tones).

But, as many fans have pointed out, colored iMacs can also serve as a nostalgic throwback to the first iMac. At a time when Apple’s aesthetic was much more fun than the metallic silver-gray feast it is today (the Apple logo was rainbow, remember), it launched machines in all sorts of charming colors. Looking at these renderings of the 2021 iMac, we cannot help thinking about the 1998 iMac G3 (below).

And judging by the response on Twitter (below), it looks like fans are ready to see Apple inject some color back into the iMac line. In fact, with some corners of the Internet getting tired of minimal graphic design, could the sentiment be spreading to product design as well?
