The Google Recorder web app arrives with Pixel audio backups

In 2019, Google launched a powerful recorder app with real-time transcriptions for Pixel devices. The latest version, released along with Pixel 5, added editing and social sharing via video clips. A Google Recorder web app will be available soon with the ability to backup audio to your Pixel.

Recorder.google.com, which differs from the old landing page of recorder.withgoogle.com, has just been published. “Recorder for web” will allow you to “share, play and search your audio”, with Google explaining how “Recordings backed up with the Recorder app on your Google Pixel will appear here”. This site works only as a client and does not allow users to record from their desktop computers.

Before the home page loads, you’ll quickly see the web application’s interface. The audio controls at the bottom allow you to play / pause, rewind 5 / skip 10 seconds, rub and control the volume.

A one- or two-column layout is available, with the last one showing the waveform and the transcript simultaneously. Users will be able to share recordings (via link) and delete from the web application. Recordings are likely to count towards your Google Drive storage limit.

The web recorder requires an update to the Android application that is not yet available. Once you are, Pixel phones will be able to start sending content to the cloud. This synchronization feature should also mean that previous recordings will stay with you when updating devices, while backup replaces the way users today need to manually upload audio to Google Drive via the sharing spreadsheet.

This new version of the application is likely to arrive soon, given the way the web infrastructure is now available.
