November 2017: Selena Gomez reveals she’s listening to Cardi B
In an interview with YouTuber Hugo Gloss, Selena is asked who she is listening to at the moment and her fandom is revealed. “Oh man, I love Cardi B!” Gomez told Gloss. “I listen to a lot of pop and hip-hop.” This happened at the beginning of Cardi’s mainstream success, as his big hit “Bodak Yellow” had just reached the top of the Billboard Hot 100 two months earlier.
September 2018: “Taki Taki” is released
From a fan to a collaborator: DJ Snake joins the two superstars for the first time – alongside the Latin top Ozuna – in the new bilingual song “Taki Taki”. The international success reaches the peak of 11th place on the Billboard Hot 100 and reaches the top of the Hot Latin Songs and Latin Airplay charts.
October 2018: Selena and Cardi co-star in the video “Taki Taki”
In the video for “Taki Taki” directed by Colin Tilley, fans finally get to see Selena and Cardi together on the screen. The best part? When Gomez appears during Cardi’s verse to mumble along the line: “But I’m a bi — boss, who are you going to leave me for ?!” The video has already accumulated more than 2 billion views on YouTube.
October 2018: Cardi sends her regards to Selena while she is in treatment
In an interview with E! News, Cardi offers a message of support to his collaborator “Taki Taki” after being reported that Gomez has been admitted to a mental health facility for anxiety and depression. “I just wanted her to know, girl, you are beautiful, rich and wait, because even sometimes I feel like I’m going crazy,” Cardi told E! “I just have to pray a lot to God and get away from social media.” In the same interview, Cardi talks enthusiastically about working with Gomez on the “Taki Taki clip set”. April 2019: Cardi and Selena join DJ Snake on the Coachella stage
DJ Snake makes the most of his 2019 Coachella set, bringing all three “Taki Taki” collaborators – Cardi B, Selena Gomez and Ozuna – on stage for the first (and so far only) full live performance of the song. (Gomez and Snake have since reunited on “Selfish Love” for their first newly released Spanish EP Revelation.)
April 2019: Selena reacts to Cardi’s video message
When one Entertainment Tonight reporter shares a video message from Cardi (“You are so amazing! You are so little bee! Such a beautiful girl!”) on the red carpet at WE Day, Gomez smiles: “She is so sweet! I am obsessed with her.
