The charge was dropped against Harris County Public Health official Dr. Hasan Gokal, accused of stealing the COVID-19 vaccine bottle

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas (KTRK) – The charges against a doctor accused of stealing a bottle of the COVID-19 vaccine have been dropped.

The records show that no probable cause was found in the case of Harris County public health worker, Dr. Hasan Gokal.

The district attorney’s office told ABC13 that the prosecutor has the option of taking this case to a grand jury. So far, a final decision has not been made.

In light of the news, Gokal’s lawyer, Paul Doyle, sent the following statement:

“We appreciate today’s outcome and will now transition our efforts towards an illegal termination process. As I publicly stated last week, an apology from Harris County Public Health and the Harris County Public Prosecutor in relationship with Dr. Gokal and his family will not be enough. The agency downplayed the name of this good civil servant and removed his job without cause. More must be done by those responsible to correct this.

We also sincerely hope that this incident will not prevent other medical personnel from the front line from doing everything in their power to ensure that vaccines are not wasted. “

According to previous records, Gokal was accused of stealing the bottle containing nine doses while working at the Lyndsay Lyons Park county vaccination site in Humble on December 29.

A week later, Gokal told a fellow Harris County Public Health official, who then reported it to supervisors. Mishandling a vaccine could result in the loss of government funds for the county, according to Harris County Public Health officials, who investigated the issue resulting in Gokal’s dismissal.

Gokal was one of the faces of Harris County Public Health during the pandemic, featured in city hall videos and panels.

According to online records, he is up to date with the Texas Medical Council and has been practicing medicine for 21 years, including nine years in Texas.
