The CDC hopes that Harry Potter, Wonder Woman and Neo can really convince people to wear masks

Wearing a mask is one of the easiest things people can do to help prevent the spread of COVID-19, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are partnering with WarnerMedia in the hope that fan favorite characters like Harry Potter, Wonder Woman, the Joker and the Imperator Furiosa can convince people to dress up.

The ad, created by a partnership between WarnerMedia, the Ad Council and CDC, features a wide variety of WarnerMedia characters from iconic films – but with digitally inserted masks.

Whether they are heroes (like members of the Fellowship of the Ring or the Justice League) or villains (like the Joker doing his iconic stair dance), everyone masks. Even the killer clown demon Pennywise’s This sports a mask – albeit scary, with a clown face.

According Adage, the ad will run throughout the United States on donated media time and is free for use on digital news and broadcast channels. WarnerMedia, of course, will run the commercial on its own channels and platforms, including HBO and Turner TV channels.

The recently released guidance from the CDC, in fact, recommends folding the masks, with a cloth mask used over a surgical one for better protection. As an alternative, the agency advocates that people tie the ear straps on their surgical masks so that they are very firm.

“Let’s go back to doing our favorite things,” says the ad, “whatever it is.”
