Our favorite streaming device has just received a major update.

How initially provoked by Google in December, Chromecast with Google TV now supports the Apple TV app on its platform. Other devices powered by Google TV will also have support for the app, including Sony and TCL 2020 TVs, when they finally hit the market later this year. Google also said that the app will arrive on additional devices with Android TV in the coming months, but gave no details on which specific devices would be included.

The addition of the Apple TV app for Chromecast devices is huge – this means that old Apple users will now be able to access all the content they purchased through the platform on their Chromecast with Google TV. In addition, for people with Apple TV + subscriptions, they will also be able to stream Apple originals on the Google device.

Apple TV was one of the last major streaming apps missing on Chromecast with Google TV, and the addition makes it a strong candidate as a cheaper alternative to Apple’s own set-top boxes. The interfaces are remarkably different, with Google TV placing a much greater emphasis on recommendation and discovery. But specifications, and especially for the casual streamer who doesn’t require a ton of device storage, Google TV checks most of the same boxes for premium features – and costs a quarter of what the Apple TV 4K box costs.

Apple originals will now appear in Google TV search results and content recommendations, as well as being added to the watch list. In addition, Google Assistant can now play titles from Apple. These features are available in the United States now, but will be released to global users in the coming months, the company said.

The best budget streaming device is getting better and better.
