The 49ers are designed to have 10 draft choices after the Jets hired Saleh

With the New York Jets signing Robert Saleh, the San Francisco 49ers is now scheduled to receive two compensatory choices for this upcoming NFL Draft and another fifth round pick via New Orleans. Here are all the draft designed selections:

  • Round 1, choose 12
  • Round 2, choose 43
  • Round 3 (competitive choice)
  • Round 4, choose 108
  • Round 5, choose 139
  • Round 5, choose 157 (Santos change)
  • Round 5 (competitive choice)
  • Round 6, choose 170
  • Round 7, Pick 194 (jet trade)
  • Round 7, choose 204

The choice of compensation for the third round is through Saleh going to the Jets, thanks to the recent change in the Rooney Rule. The Niners were given a choice in the fifth round as part of the exchange that sent Kwon Alexander to the Saints last season. The selection for the seventh round came when the 49ers switched to Jordan Willis last October.

Looking at Over the Cap’s compensatory cancellation chart, choice # 157 comes from Emmanuel Sanders signing with Saints in the last off-season. Over the Cap does not have San Francisco receiving a courtesy choice for Alexander, although the NFL could still award the 49ers at a later date, once they were announced.

The choice of third round compensation that the 49ers received by Saleh will be in the 90s or 100s. In addition, since the NFL rewards the choices of the comp, choice # 108 may end up being ten or more selections below. The good news is that the Niners could negotiate their choice of comparison.

So, in case the team is in love with a player in this next draft, the 49ers added ammunition to go up. If Martin Mayhew, who is being interviewed for Washington’s general manager on Friday, is hired, San Francisco will receive another choice of compensation in the third round, both for this season and the next.
