The 21-year-old teacher is the youngest woman to row alone in the Atlantic Ocean

A British swimming teacher has defined a world record as the youngest woman to row alone in any ocean after finishing her 3,000-mile journey across the Atlantic.

Jasmine Harrison, 21, left the Canary Islands on December 12 and arrived in Antigua, the Caribbean, 70 days, three hours and 48 minutes later, as part of the 2020 Talisker Whiskey Atlantic Challenge. The ocean rowing event includes dozens of boats from around the world with some solo rowers and others with teams of up to four.

Along his journey, Harrison came close to colliding with a drill ship and overturned twice. With about 100 miles to go on the record-breaking trip, Harrison overturned and injured his elbow.

“I was basically thrown against a wall at 20 miles an hour. This will hurt, especially in the middle of sleep ”, she said The Guardian.

During the trip, Harrison would row for two hours and sleep for two hours in rotation. While she was isolated from the world, she could use a satellite phone to make calls to home.

Harrison said she felt inspired to take part in the challenge after seeing the 2018 race finish while teaching swimming in the Caribbean.

“It felt like I needed to do this,” said Harrison Good Morning Britain Monday, adding that he only started rowing in July. “I knew I wouldn’t be happy before I paddled across the Atlantic.”

Before Harrison, the youngest woman to row in the Atlantic Ocean with Katie Spotz, an American who made the trip in 2010 at the age of 22.
