Thandie Newton will now be known as Thandiwe Newton: ‘It was always my name’

“Westworld” star Thandie Newton is claiming her real name.

The Emmy-winning British actress said she will now play Thandiwe Newton in TV and film credits.

“That is my name. It has always been my name. I am taking back what is mine,” she told British Vogue in an article published over the weekend.

Thandiwe means “loved” in Shona, a Bantu language from Zimbabwe, where your mother is from.

Newton, whose prominent credits include “Mission: Impossible II” and “Crash”, said that the annihilation of his name began at the Catholic school, “where the W of his name was taken inside, out of sight and out of reach of the voice, in a vain hope of making her feel less different, ”wrote the magazine.

The “W” remained “lost” in its first film (listed on the IMDB as “Flirting” in 1991), Vogue noted, and has remained so for decades.

But Newton, who has always drawn attention to racism and sexual abuse, is now defending his real name.

“The thing I am most grateful for in our business now is to be in the company of other people who really see me,” she told Vogue. “And not being an accomplice in the objectification of blacks as ‘others’, which is what happens when you are the only one.”
