A Reddit post who claimed to be aware Tesla Inc (NASDAQ: TSLA) The investment in Bitcoin (BTC) confirmed that the information he made public on Jan. 2 was not true, the New York Post reported on Tuesday.
What happened: After Tesla made its Bitcoin investment announcement on Monday, attention turned to the Reddit post by user TSLAInsider five weeks earlier.
“I am a software developer working in R&D at Tesla in California, in the past 72 hours our company bought 24701 BTC at an average price of $ 33,142,” posted the user with the TSLAinsider identifier on Reddit last month, “said the post : as reported by Reuters.
The Post said the Reddit user behind the TSLAInsider identifier is a 24-year-old German political science student named Hendrik.
“If you want to know the truth: I’m a young German and I was taking acid while writing this post last month,” Hendrik told the Post in an interview.
“I had the statement that Elon was going to buy Bitcoin, so I created this trollpost. And now all the newspapers around the world are writing about it, it’s kind of funny and scary to be honest. “
The user posted a link to the Post’s story and seemed to corroborate.

Why it matters: Reddit forums have been gaining prominence since r / WallStreetBets took the bigwigs on Wall Street head-on with a slight squeeze on GameStop Corp (NYSE: GME), AMC Entertainment Holdings Inc (NYSE: AMC), Blackberry Ltd (NYSE: BB) and others.
