For 2021, the Tesla Model S and X have been revamped with subtle exterior updates, a new variant Plaid + Model S promising 520 miles of range and a top speed of 200 mph, and a new bizarre steering wheel. Like Roadshow’s Tim Stevens points on Twitter, it’s almost like the quasi-joystick wheel used in the KITT Knight. Or it looks like a conventional three-spoke steering wheel with a flat bottom and the top cut off.
This is the kind of, uh, extravagance that we expect from Tesla. In addition to being the richest man in the world, CEO Elon Musk loves science fiction, memes and giving cars weird features like virtual cushions, so a steering wheel like this may not be surprising. However, giving the very conservative S model such a strange wheel is a strange choice.
Also defying conventions, Tesla did not hold a formal disclosure event for the updated Models S and X, instead showing images of the car on slides from its fourth quarter earnings presentation and discreetly updating the configurator on its website. The photos of the presentation and the configurator reveal other internal updates besides the steering wheel, including a new infotainment screen in landscape orientation, allowing passengers to play video games. Other changes are more subtle, such as new door release buttons and window switches that look like those used on Models 3 and Y.
The exterior changes are much more subtle, with new revised front wheels and fascias. Also of interest is the Model S Plaid +, which promises a range of 520 miles, a top speed of more than 200 mph and a 0-60 mph time of less than 1.99 seconds. The price is set at $ 140,000, and Tesla says deliveries will begin before the end of this year. In addition, the Model X is getting its own trim engine Plaid variant, with a base price of $ 120,000, a range of 340 miles and a top speed of 163 mph. Tesla says the Model X Plaid will be able to reach 60 mph in 2.5 seconds.
The base refurbished S model starts at just under $ 80,000 and offers 412 miles of range and can reach 60 mph in 3.1 seconds. In its configurator, Tesla says that deliveries of this car are set to start in March. Also coming in March is the “regular” Model S Plaid, which at a base price of $ 120,000 is cheaper than initially announced. The new basic Model X will arrive in April with a base price of just under $ 90,000 and a range of 360 miles, and the Model X Plaid will arrive in April as well.
