‘Terminator’ anime series commissioned on Netflix

An anime series “Terminator” was ordered on Netflix, Variety Learned.

As the project is still in its early stages, the plot details are being kept under wraps. Netflix partnered with Skydance in the series, with Skydance producing the last two “Terminator” films. The series is produced in partnership with Production IG, with whom Netflix has had a production line contract since 2018. Production IG’s previous credits in the anime include “Ghost in the Shell”, “B: The Beginning” and “Eden of the East. ”

“‘Terminator’ is one of the most iconic science fiction stories ever created – and it has only become more relevant to our world over time,” said John Derderian, Netflix’s vice president for Japan and anime. “The new animated series will explore this universe in a way never done before. We can’t wait for fans to experience this incredible new chapter in the epic battle between machines and humans. “

Mattson Tomlin will act as showrunner and executive producer on the series. Tomlin most recently wrote the original Netflix film “Project Power” and worked on the script for Matt Reeves’ next film, “The Batman”. He is represented by CAA, Grandview and Goodman Genow.

“Anyone who knows my writing knows that I believe in big swings and go after the heart,” said Tomlin. “I’m honored that Netflix and Skydance gave me the opportunity to approach ‘Terminator’ in a way that breaks conventions, subverts expectations and has real courage.”

The “Terminator” franchise has been a huge success, with the six films so far having grossed more than $ 2 billion worldwide. The most recent entries were “Terminator: Dark Fate” and “Terminator: Genisys”. Although the Netflix series is the first animated series in the franchise’s history, it has already been adapted for the small screen. The live-action drama “Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles” aired on Fox for two seasons with Lena Headey starring as Sarah Connor and Thomas Dekker starring as John Connor. Summer Glau starred as the Terminator sent back in time to protect John.

“I asked my longtime friend and colleague Mamoru Oshii what he thought of the idea of turning ‘Terminator’ into an animated series,” said Mitsuhisa Ishikawa, President and CEO of Production IG “His answer was’ Ishikawa, did you get out of your mind ‘At that moment, I was confident that we should get on board. As big fans, our team at Production IG is putting their hearts and souls into creating this series. We hope fans like it! “

The news from the anime series “Terminator” arrives at a time when Netflix is giving an increasing boost to the anime arena. In addition to several projects already launched, such as “Castlevania” and “Sangue de Zeus”, the streamer also has several others in progress. Among them is a “Splinter Cell” series by writer “John Wick” Derek Kolstad and an anime spinoff from Zack Snyder’s Netflix movie “Army of the Dead”.
