Tennessee hunter witnessed double lake murder, officials say, as search for 70-year-old suspect continues

A Tennessee hunter told investigators that he witnessed the murders of two duck hunters in a lake on Monday morning, officials said, while the 70-year-old suspect remains on the loose.

Warrants were issued on Tuesday for the arrest of David Vowell, considered armed and dangerous, on two counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of Chance Black, 26, and Zachary Grooms, 25, on Lake Reelfoot in Obion County, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation said.

Obion County District Attorney Tommy Thomas told WREG-TV that investigators spoke to a third hunter who was in the same blindness as the victims when the incident occurred, but could not comment on what led to the shooting.

Thomas told ABC News that a witness allegedly Vowell shot the men after an argument broke out.

The investigators told the media that a vehicle and boat belonging to Vowell were recovered as the search for the suspect intensified.

Resident David Gray told the local WPSD-TV station that the lake “is a very peaceful area” and that the incident worried the community.

“A lot of hunters come here and like to hunt ducks and everything, but being upset that someone is shooting more ducks or whatever the case may be, I don’t know,” said Gray.
