Tampa Bay Rays negotiates John Curtiss for Miami Marlins, acquires Boston Red Sox pitchers in 2nd transaction

MIAMI – Right-handed appeaser John Curtiss was traded on Wednesday by the Tampa Bay Rays for the Miami Marlins by secondary league first-base player Evan Edwards.

Rays also traded secondary league catcher Ronaldo Hernandez and infielter Nick Sogard for the Boston Red Sox for right-handed pitcher Chris Mazza, left-handed pitcher Jeffrey Springs and money.

Boston placed receiver Kevin Plawecki on the list of COVID-19-related injuries.

Curtiss went 3-0 with an ERA of 1.80 in 17 games last year. He had an ERA of 6.30 out of 10 post-season entries for American League champions.

Curtiss also played for the Angels and Twins and has a career of 3.83 ERA. It further strengthens the bullpen for the Marlins, who previously added southpaw Ross Detwiler and right-handed Dylan Floro, Anthony Bass and Adam Cimber.

Mazza threw nine games as a starter and reliever to Boston last year and went 1-2 with an ERA of 4.80. Springs went 0-2 with a 7.08 ERA in 16 games outside the bullpen.

Edwards was chosen in the fourth round of NC State in 2019. He hit 0.281 with nine home runs in 73 games on the lowest lows that year.
