The Pittsburgh Steelers made their first move since the start of the legal adulteration period at noon on Monday. According to Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network, the Steelers are hiring cornerback Cameron Sutton on a two-year contract worth $ 9 million.
Drafted in the third round of the 2017 NFL draft from Tennessee, Sutton became a key player in defending the Steelers in their use of subpackage football. Appearing in all 16 games last season, Sutton had six games in defense, where he recorded an interception, eight saved passes, three forced fumbles, a fumble recovery, 1.0 sacks and 30 tackles.
With cornerbacks Steven Nelson and Joe Haden currently under contract for a final season in 2021, Steelers couldn’t afford to lose Cameron Sutton and Mike Hilton to the free agency. Becoming a “stick for all work” in the Steelers’ secondary, Sutton can play in both the internal and external cornerback position, as well as safety.
In two years and $ 9 million, the maximum Sutton will cost the Steelers at the 2021 salary cap will be $ 4.5 million. Once the exact breakdown is known, Steelers is likely to be looking at a $ 3 million limit reached this season, as Sutton’s deal certainly includes a signing bonus.
Sutton is currently the only free agent for 2020 Steelers to sign a contract. In a smart move from Pittsburgh, they keep Sutton in town to better protect his secondary.
