Steam expands support for Xbox and PS5 controller

If you, like me, prefer to play your PC games with a stolen controller from the home console box, good news is coming. Steam is testing expanded features for the PS5 and Xbox controllers, including extra customization and button mapping. I’m still using a very old Xbox One controller, but hey, by the time I update, it looks like all the new features may be ready and waiting for me when I connect one.

Earlier this week, Steam described some new features that you can try moving to the Steam Client Beta branch. Xbox controllers make the most of their gains this time with the ability to rewire the share button on the Xbox Series X controller and link those sophisticated paddles to the back of the Elite controller in the controller settings.

They are also testing support for more than four Xbox controllers. I don’t know about you, but there are currently no more than four Xbox controllers or cable creatures to handle in my home. Maybe by the end of 2021, huh?

PS5 controllers receive a small nod for now with the option to activate or deactivate the LED light on the gamepad or just activate it when multiple controllers are connected. Steam also improved support for the PS5 controller at the end of last year, not long after the launch of the new system.

There’s a bit more in the Steam update about support for the Wooting Two keyboard, HOTAS and G15 devices as well.

If you want to connect your entire family of Xbox controllers and see what happens, you can opt for the beta in the accounts section of the Steam settings menu.
