State Department considers joint boycott of Beijing Olympics in 2022

A spokesman for the United States Olympic Committee did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

“We are talking about 2022 and we are still in April 2021, so these Games are still far away,” said Price. “I would not like to set a deadline for this, but these discussions are ongoing.”

In a tweet after the briefingPrice said the State Department did not have an announcement about the Olympics, but would “continue to consult closely with allies and partners to define our common concerns and establish our shared approach with the PRC”.

The Beijing Winter Games start on February 4 next year.

Republicans hacked last month asked the Biden government to punish the Chinese government for its human rights abuses, but even within the Republican Party, there was disagreement over how far ahead with the Olympics. Some called for boycotts, while others suggested moving the Games to another host country.

On Tuesday, Senator Rick Scott (R-Florida) said that President Joe Biden should request the transfer of the 2022 Olympic Games to the United States. Scott, who has advocated a possible change since 2019, said it was hypocritical for Biden to support last week’s efforts to withdraw the All-Star game from Georgia’s Major League Baseball because of his newly passed voting law, but not to take position on Olympics.

“Now is the time for President Biden to lead the United States and the world and make it clear that the United States will never tolerate the oppression and genocide that occurs in communist China,” said Scott.
