Starlink FCC app reveals plans for satellite internet on moving vehicles

The idea of Teslas being connected to the Internet via Starlink may soon become a reality, with SpaceX recently submitting a request to the FCC to expand the satellite service to “moving vehicles, boats and aircraft”. The app arrives not long after Musk gave Twitter approval for a “Mini” Starlink, which could provide Internet connectivity anywhere.

In its FCC application, SpaceX aimed to acquire a general license authorizing the operation of end-user earth stations for deployment called Vehicle Mounted Earth Stations (“VMESs”), Ship Earth Stations (“ESVs”) and Earth Stations on Board Aircraft (“ESAAs”). Collectively called Ground Moving Stations (“ESIMs”), these stations would have the ability to bring Internet connectivity to moving vehicles, such as cars, ships or even aircraft.

“SpaceX Services seeks authority to deploy and operate these earth stations (1) as VMES in the United States and its territories, (2) as ESVs in United States territorial waters and in international waters worldwide, and (3) as ESAAs on US registered aircraft operating worldwide and non-US registered aircraft operating in US airspace, ”noted SpaceX.

Further elaborating, SpaceX noted that Starlink ESIMs can be invaluable, considering that Internet users today are increasingly reluctant to give up web connectivity while traveling. SpaceX said that, ultimately, the idea of Starlink being used for moving vehicles is a logical extension of the core services of the satellite internet system.

“Users are no longer willing to give up connectivity while on the move, whether driving a truck across the country, moving a cargo ship from Europe to a United States port or during a domestic or international flight. To help meet this demand, SpaceX has deployed an innovative, economical and spectrum efficient satellite system, capable of providing robust broadband service to customers around the world, especially in underserved and underserved areas.

“SpaceX has already secured US authority for the space station components of its NGSO system. This application takes the next step when seeking authority for ESIMs that will allow the extension of this network of homes and offices for vehicles, boats and aircraft. The operation under the requested general license will promote competition in the broadband services market on the move, for the benefit of drivers, ship operators and air travelers in the United States and abroad. “

Starlink’s ESIMs would benefit several entities, one of which would be Tesla, Elon Musk’s energy and electric vehicle company. Tesla’s electric cars are connected to the Internet for features like video streaming and over-the-air updates, with the company even offering a “Premium Connectivity” service as an option today. With Starlink’s ability to connect to the internet in a moving vehicle, Tesla would no longer have to rely on existing mobile internet providers for its cars.

The Starlink application to provide Internet access for vehicles on the move can be accessed below.
