Starbucks plans to reduce water use in coffee supplies by 2030

Starbucks Corp. SBUX,
+ 1.26%
said on Monday that it will halve water use in its supply chain by 2030, taking a variety of measures, including the purchase of 600 “eco-mills” that have reduced water use by 80% in places like Guatemala and Mexico, where they were installed; and improvements to existing water processing machines and technologies. In 2030, the chain also intends to reach its goal of carbon neutral green coffee by 2030. Starbucks will equip farmers with tools that will reduce the use of fertilizers; promote varieties that are resistant to climate and rust, which will allow more coffee to be grown in the same area; and promoting and restoring coffee-affected forests, starting in Peru and Colombia. Starbucks shares rose 85.9% last year, surpassing the S&P 500 SPX index,
+ 0.73%
which is up to 70.6% in the period.
