St. Vincent is preparing to release the new album Dad’s house this spring, and she is launching it through the time-tested means of viral antics. Last week, St. Vincent announced the album with a series of retro 70s-style poster ads in New York. In the first edition of your weekly newsletter The New Cue, Annie Clark wrote about the new LP, describing it as “the sound of being down in downtown New York, 1973. Glamor that hasn’t slept for three days”. St. Vincent hasn’t shared any of the songs on the album yet, but today, she’s using a trailer and a hotline to give us a few seconds of the first single “Pay Your Way In Pain”.
Clark has already announced that he recorded “Pay Your Way In Pain” with her Masseduction contributor Jack Antonoff. Last night, Clark posted a one-minute trailer that looks a lot like a 70s thriller: Clark, with blond hair and a raincoat, follows the sound of a phone ringing through an old apartment building. When she finds the phone, she answers, and a deep male voice on the other end says, “Hello, Annie.”
At the end of the video, we heard a few seconds of a new song, which is probably our preview of “Pay Your Way In Pain”. It looks funky, and there’s a prominent electric zither riff over there. (Clark mentioned Stevie Wonder and Sly And The Family Stone as inspirations.) The trailer also ends with this message: “CALL NOW! 1-833-77-DADDY. “
If you call this number, you will hear a small recorded message that looks like the trailer narrated from a 70’s exploration film: “She is back, in a new role like you have never seen her before. Introducing the new single ‘Pay Your Way In Pain. ”Nobody expected, nobody believed and nobody could stop it. ”You can also hear a few more seconds of music, even though it comes out strongly distorted. But there are rumors that the single will be released on Friday, so we won’t have to wait long.
