South Carolina’s new football coach, Shane Beamer, reflects on the lessons learned in Blacksburg from his father

COLOMBIA, SC (WDBJ) – Shane Beamer was officially introduced as South Carolina’s new football coach on Monday, and it took a long and tortuous path for him to get the opportunity.

“It is an absolute honor to be the football coach here at the University of South Carolina,” said Beamer. “Today is an absolute dream that has come true.”

Beamer’s name may have given him a start in the coaching profession, but it was his resume and preparation that earned him his first major job.

It is a curriculum that includes charging and wrapping the earphone cables of his father, Hall of Fame coach Frank Beamer, when he was a teenager in Blacksburg, and saw the 43-year-old pass by seven FBS schools in the past two decades .

“I wanted to be a ball boy and I was told, ‘We have winning boys. You are too young to do this. ‘I wanted to be a coach and distribute water and they said,’ We have people for this. You can’t do that, either. So, on the days when the headphones still had wires or cables, I was the cable bearer. I wanted to do a great job. I was very meticulous. I still am today, ”said Shane Beamer. “So, I went out to our garage in Blacksburg, Virginia, and I took a long extension cord and plugged it into the wall and just walked around the garage practicing with the headset cable because I didn’t want to go out there on Saturday to ruin things .

“I hope I have maintained these qualities since that day of wanting to do a great job and that no detail is too small. I keep quoting my father, but one thing he always said was: ‘Take care of the little things and the big ones will come’ ”.

It’s an incredibly proud day at the Beamer home, especially for Frank Beamer, who knows that his eldest son is made of the right material to succeed.

“You have to worry about your players and they care and show it,” said College Football Hall-of-Famer. “You have to respect your players and he respects and shows that. And then you have to always be true to them. I think they know that if Shane says something, they can believe it.

“These are the things, I think, when you form your foundation and build a good, solid foundation, the rest will take care of itself. I can’t say how proud we are and he will do a great job. “
