Recently, Martha Stewart launched a list of The most popular dog breeds in all US states, and Can you guess which South Carolina dog you love the most? According to the list, the Boxer claims first place in the state of Palmetto. 🐶
Astonished? As much as I (Katie here Amo) I love Boxers, I was a little shocked by the Boykin Spaniel did not make the cut.
If you took a long walk downtown, and especially if you stopped at Southeast Wildlife Exhibition (SEWE), it is likely that you have come across one of these small brown hunting dogs. And did you know that the Boykin Spaniel is from South Carolina official state dog?
Quick facts about the Boykin Spaniel:
- They usually weigh between 25-40 pounds + live 10-15 years.
- They are known for their friendly, eager + lovable temperament.
- They were originally created by Southern Carolinians to be hunting dogs.
- The breed was officially called a SC state dog in 1985.
In the early 1900s, South Carolina hunters in the Wateree River needed a dog that could recover on land + in water and it was small enough to fit compact boats during hunters’ trips across the river.
To allow enough space for a dog + hunting equipment, Camden’s LW “Whit” Boykin experienced selective breeding to produce the ideal companion. During this time, your acquaintance Alexander L. White tripped over a little stray dog that he got + nominated Dumpy, Who showed interest in recovering. (Check out Dumpy’s book On here.) White brought it to Whit to use in creation, and so the first Boykin Spaniels were born.
Boykins are known for their webbed feet that allowed them swim exceptionally well, and were originally used to Hunting turkey + waterfowl.
