South Carolina St hires Memphis assistant Madlock as coach

ORANGEBURG, SC (AP) – The state of South Carolina has hired former Memphis assistant Tony Madlock to be the head coach of men’s basketball.

Bulldogs athletic director Stacy L. Danley announced the move on Thursday.

Madlock has spent 25 years as a technical assistant, including the last three seasons in Memphis under coach and teammate Penny Hardaway.

Prior to that, Madlock was in Mississippi as an assistant for three seasons and then served as interim head coach in 2017-18.

Madlock takes over from Murray Garvin, whose contract has not been renewed after more than eight seasons. Bulldogs play at the Middle East Athletic Conference and went 1-17 last season.

Madlock said he was excited to join the Bulldogs and start working to reverse the program.
