South Carolina officially hires eight technical assistants

The South Carolina Board of Trustees met on Monday afternoon to discuss and then approve contracts for eight assistant coaches on the South Carolina football team. Seven of these coaches have already been announced by the school as signings, pending the approval of the Board of Trustees. The eighth, former Arkansas wide receivers trainer Justin Stepp, was also announced.

All eight coaches had their contracts approved by the Board of Trustees, which means that the first year’s head coach Shane Beamer has just two more assistant coaches in the field to hire. Beamer also needs to hire a strength and conditioning coach, which usually requires a contract over the limit that would require BOT approval.

In addition to strength and fitness, Beamer still needs to hire a defensive coordinator and a defensive coach.

Here is the list of contracts that were approved on Monday by the school’s Board of Trustees.

Offensive coordinator / coach QB Mike Bobo: 2 years / $ 1.2 per year
Offensive lineman Will be friend: 2 years / $ 700,000 per year
Tight-tipped trainer Erik Kimrey: 2 years / $ 200,000 per year
Running Backs Coach Des Kitchings: 2 years / $ 300,000 per year
Special teams coordinator Pete Lembo: 3 years / $ 450,000 per year
Linebacker trainer Mike Peterson: 2 years / $ 300,000 per year
Defensive line coach Tracy Rocker: 2 years / $ 525,000 per year
Wide receivers coach Justin Stepp: 2 years / $ 460,000 per year

All coaches on the South Carolina football team now have a multi-year contract, something that we reported would be the case on Sunday night. All coaches have a two-year contract, except Lembo, who has a three-year contract. Each technician who is on a two-year contract sees his contract expire on December 31, 2022. Lembo’s contract expires on December 31, 2023.

Beamer had his contract officially approved by the Board of Trustees on December 15 and will make $ 2.75 million a year each year for the duration of the five-year agreement. Beamer, a first-time coach who returned to South Carolina after spending the past three seasons in Oklahoma, was officially announced by Gamecocks on December 6.

Bobo, Kitchings, Peterson and Rocker were part of the Gamecocks team in previous seasons. Bobo, Kitchings and Rocker were all first-year coaches in South Carolina last season. Peterson was on former coach Will Muschamp’s initial team with the Gamecocks.

Friend leaves rival SEC East Tennessee to join the Gamecocks after occupying the same position with the Volunteers. Kimrey joins the South Carolina team after spending 17 seasons as a head coach at Hammond School, a local school, where he won 12 state championships. Lembo, a special team guru, held the same position in Memphis for two seasons. Stepp is also from a SEC program that joined Gamecocks after spending three seasons in Arkansas.
