South Carolina may order hospitals to suspend elective surgery if vaccinations do not accelerate.

South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster said he would order hospitals to suspend elective surgery if COVID-19 vaccination rates do not increase in the state, according to the local news station. WIS.

The announcement was made while Mr. McMaster visited the vaccination clinic at Lexington Medical Center in West Columbia, SC, on January 19.

The governor is asking each hospital to have a 90 percent vaccine utilization rate. About 16 state hospitals were below that rate on January 19.

The governor said that if hospitals do not speed up the process of administering the vaccine, he will request or require the cancellation of elective procedures to ensure that there are sufficient staff for vaccinations.

In addition, Mr. McMaster said that each hospital must administer its entire weekly quota of COVID-19 vaccine before receiving next week’s shipment.

“The hospital shelves must be empty,” said McMaster, according to WIS. “When this new shipment arrives, the old shipment must be in someone’s arm.”
