Indiana is expected to hire Georgia defensive coach Charlton Warren as a defensive coordinator, sources told ESPN.
Warren will replace Kane Wommack, who left last month to become South Alabama’s head coach. His hiring will be finalized in the next few days, sources said.
Warren, who turned 44 on Sunday, has spent the past two seasons in Georgia. He served as defensive coordinator in the Air Force, his alma mater, from 2008 to 2013. In addition to Georgia, Warren trained defensive coasts in Nebraska, North Carolina, Tennessee and Florida. Born in Georgia, Warren played defensive in the Air Force from 1996 to 1998 before spending seven years of active service in the United States Air Force. He started his coaching career in the Air Force in 2005.
Michigan state assistant Mike Tressel and Liberty defensive coordinator Scott Symons were both among those considered in Indiana, according to sources.
Indiana finished 12th in the AP’s last vote, after a 6-2 record in 2020. The program has made significant advances in defense under Wommack and coach Tom Allen over the past few seasons.
