There is a reason why you can’t find a Sony PlayStation 5 anywhere. Consumers are apparently catching them faster than any hardware platform in the history of the United States.

On Friday, NPD Group analyst Mat Piscatella tweeted the latest stats in consumer spending on video games, including the PS5 “currently the best-selling hardware platform” in the history of the United States, in terms of total dollar sales.

Piscatella did not share an exact dollar amount for the PS5, but noted that consumer spending on video game hardware, software and accessories has already totaled $ 9.3 billion this year.

Sony did not include specific sales figures in its earnings report last month, but the company indicated sold 4.5 million PS5 consoles only in 2020. Chief Financial Officer Hiroki Totoki said at a news conference in February that Sony plans to sell more than 14.8 million units in the next fiscal year, which begins this month.

The PS5 dropped to second place in February, according to the NPD. It was replaced only by Nintendo Switch, which may have seen an increase in sales after Super Mario 3D World – Bowser’s Fury, the last title on the Switch, released last month.
