Sony is abandoning all PS4 models out of a slim type in Japan

You can only get the 500 GB Jet Black now

It starts!

Like all major hardware purges, Sony is starting with Japan. It happened with Vita and now it will happen with PS4.

As reported by Game Watch, Sony Interactive Entertainment Japan Asia will eliminate all PS4 Pro models and all but one PS4 Slim model. In short, the only PS4 that will be actively sold in Japan by Sony will be the PS4 slim 500GB Jet Black model. As Gematsu points out, the PS4 “OG” has already been discontinued.

Although the PS4 performed terribly, reaching 113.5 million units and increasing (placing it directly in the top five of the list of best-selling consoles of all time, just above the original PlayStation), Sony is obviously looking to the future here.

There are many considerations when it comes to hardware, such as physical space on the retailer’s shelves, as well as manufacturing and overhead concerns. Sony needs to meet the PS5’s demand and put the hardware in the hands of everyone who can; and out of an era of “lotteries” and chaos on the PS5. For Sony, it is the beginning of a new era. For PlayStation fans and collectors, it’s the end of one.
