CES 2021 will not officially start until next week, but Sony has decided to release part of its new line of monitors on YouTube ahead of its long-awaited press conference on Monday.
Sony’s next B and C series monitors are modular MicroLED models in the company’s mega-expensive professional LED Crystal line. If you are looking to replace your 43 inch device, look away now: these are huge premium sets aimed at professional installations or very wealthy people after a good screen condition.
MicroLED is a cutting edge technology with all the benefits of OLED TVs and none of the shortcomings. As with OLED, each pixel is self-emitting, so one can be completely black, while the next can be bright white or a vibrant color. MicroLEDs can also be brighter than OLEDs. The promise: incredible contrast. MicroLEDs are also inorganic, so they do not degrade or suffer image retention or burning.
These new monitors feature technology from some of the company’s consumer TVs, such as its X1 video processor, MotionFlow for class-leading motion processing and ’22-bit Super Bit Mapping’ for smoother gradients.
We are also looking at 1800 nits of brightness, which is below Samsung’s claims with its newly revealed microLED TV. Sony models also feature a wide color gamut, a 1,000,000: 1 contrast ratio, HDR, 120 fps frame rate and 3D technology.
Series C promises “high contrast with deep black coating”, while Series B offers “high gloss with anti-reflective coating”. All the details are expected at CES next week, when the company is expected to reveal details about its much more consumer-friendly OLED and LCD TVs for 2021.
Samsung is also showcasing its first consumer-ready MicroLED TV, among many others in its recently announced 2021 TV line. But, as with Sony, don’t expect it to come cheap.
