Some Apple AirPods Max owners are finding condensation inside the headphones, according to some reports on Twitter.
An Apple AirPods Max owner shared images of the potentially worrying problem, which clearly show the water droplets inside the headphones. They claim that the condensation problem caused “ear detection problems” and that the headphones were never used in a humid environment.
The tweet resulted in a handful of other users reporting that they experienced exactly the same condensation problem when using Apple AirPods Max, although in different usage scenarios.
I had exactly the same problem, with a light walk (40mn) and then again while watching a movie (1h30). I decided to return them after seeing that the water was also getting into the driver and that the ring was turning red (or maybe I was thinking too much). Anyway, very worrying for meDecember 29, 2020
Although it is difficult to say whether the problem is widespread, condensation tends to occur when hot air reaches a cold surface. Apple AirPods Max are predominantly made of metal, and headphones often appear cool to the touch. It is possible, then, that condensation will occur here and not on its plastic-coated rivals, such as the Sony WH-1000XM4 headphones.
It remains to be seen whether more condensation reports will appear now that Apple headphones are available worldwide and should experience more weather conditions and use-case scenarios. The good news is that we didn’t have the problem during our time with the latest generation headphones.
Great sound
While we appreciated the impressive audio performance of Apple’s first pair of headphones in our review of the Apple AirPods Max, the $ 550 / £ 549 / AU $ 899 price tag, ineffective carrying case and limited features for Android users means we only recommend them for iOS users with a lot of money left.
We contacted Apple to comment on whether the company can help shed some light on the condensation problem and will update this story accordingly.
