Skier caught in avalanche in the mountains near Utah resort, research in progress

Authorities are working on a search and rescue operation for a skier who was buried by an avalanche in Park City, Utah.

Two friends were skiing on a stretch of camp outside the Park City Mountain Canyons Village resort on Saturday when they triggered the avalanche, Summit County sheriff’s office said.

After one of the skiers got stuck in the snow, the other tried to dig them up. The friend managed to reach the skier and tried to save their lives, said the sheriff’s office, but had to leave the site because conditions had deteriorated.

“The danger of an extreme avalanche prevented the rescue team from entering the area before nightfall,” said the sheriff’s office.

Authorities would resume search and rescue efforts with the helicopter’s support on Sunday morning, according to the Summit County Sheriff’s Office. The sheriff’s office warned skiers to be cautious on inland trails and to check for avalanche risk at the Utah Avalanche Center.
