A Singapore teacher seemed physically disturbed to realize that he had wasted two hours of his time giving lectures in complete silence. Dong Wang is an associate professor in the Department of Mathematics at the National University of Singapore (NUS). Like many educators around the world, he has taught online classes to help control the spread of COVID-19. However, a recent class showed him the obstacles that come with this way of teaching – especially those that are technical in nature. The students in the class said everything went well in the first few minutes until Wang’s screen froze. Unfortunately, the teacher did not notice and continued teaching for the next two hours. What Wang didn’t realize was that his microphone was muted. He ended up talking to himself all the time. The clueless teacher only knew what had happened at the end of the class, when he started calling to ask questions. At this point, his microphone was already working. “Hello, professor, you have actually been muted all the time. We haven’t been able to hear anything from you since 6:08 pm,“one student replied. Wang’s reaction was recorded in a now viral video. After realizing what happened, he appeared to have a mild panic attack, hyperventilating for a moment before announcing that he would rehash the lecture. YouTube users who claim to be in the class reported that they had done “all kinds of things” to get his attention, but he just ignored them. “The class started at 6 pm and he was muted from 6:08 pm. Students tried all kinds of things to get his attention by turning on the sound and even calling his phone number” user Asuza Chan wrote. “However, he did not respond and continued with the lesson.” Chan said that many students left the class as soon as Wang’s screen froze. But more than 20 stayed and “waited patiently” for a correction. It is unclear what caused Wang’s speech to freeze. But Chan suspects it must be because he was using an iPad, which is not exactly ideal.
Wang’s reaction, which was first posted by user @queen_yx_ on TikTok, has already received over 653,000 views. A YouTube reporter for Singapore Incidents has almost 130,000 views. “You can see how much sadness has accumulated in a matter of seconds Animate the teacher. Things happen. Your determination will not be in vain,” a YouTube user wrote. Another commented, “Took [a/the class] with him before, he teaches well. Feel bad for him. Jia your teacher! “ Meanwhile, one joked, “Good trick. When you haven’t prepared your material for the lecture, silence it and then do a Korean drama. It works all the time.” Featured image screenshots via @queen_yx_
