Shield TV adds support for PS5 and Xbox Series X controller

If you own an Nvidia Shield TV, another update is coming. Shield Experience Upgrade 8.2.2 brings support for PS5 and Xbox Series X / S controllers to the Nvidia Shield TV.

The 27th in a long line of software updates for the Nvidia Shield series based on Android TV brings support for two new controllers. Specifically, these are the controllers that come with Sony’s new PlayStation 5, as well as Microsoft’s new controller for the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S.

To pair the controllers, you only need to follow a few steps:

  • DualSense: Hold PlayStation and the Share / Clip button until the light flashes blue.
  • Xbox Series X / S: Hold the pairing button until the Xbox button flashes.

When connected, these controllers can be used with Nvidia’s own GeForce Now streaming service, as well as native Android games. Technically speaking, it should also work with Stadia if you sideload the application.

In addition to support for the PS5 controller and Xbox Series X / S, this Nvidia Shield TV update also includes some other tweaks. There is a new integration of Control4, a home automation system for other smart home appliances. These systems can now control Shield TVs with the Control4 app and remote control capable of fully controlling the TV Shield and its installed apps.

Finally, Nvidia also notes that this update features the December 2020 Android security patch and also a fix for the 2019 TV remotes to use infrared to control Denon receivers.
