The Santa Bárbara Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a shootout that took place inside a vehicle parked on Burtis Street in Santa Bárbara that was not incorporated on Thursday afternoon. The shooting left one victim dead and the other in critical condition at a local hospital.
On January 7, 2021, at around 12:30 pm, passersby in the area heard gunshots and then watched a guy flee the area. The witness observed the victims in the vehicle and ran from the area to call 911. Delegates discovered that two men sitting in the front seat of a vehicle parked on Burtis St. One block 600 suffered a fatal injury, the other was transported by paramedics.
The area between Hollister Ave. and Atascadero Creek from Turnpike to Patterson received a shelter in order for several hours. Delegates, K-9s and a helicopter from the County Air Support Unit scoured the area for the suspect, but he was not found.
The deceased victim is a 19-year-old man who lived in the unincorporated area of Santa Bárbara. The surviving victim is a 19-year-old resident of Isla Vista and is listed in critical but stable condition this afternoon. The suspect was reported to be a 20-something man, white or Hispanic, with dark hair. No further details are currently available and the reason for the shooting has yet to be determined. The suspect is still at large, but investigators do not believe the general public is at risk.
The sheriff’s detectives are asking the public for help. With the prevalence of home security systems, cameras and video bell technology, investigators are asking residents within a 800-meter radius of Burtis St. to check their video systems for any suspicious activity between 11 am and 1 pm. Suspicious activities may include unusual vehicles or people, or activities that appear to be contrary to normal neighborhood activities. The blockade was lifted in a Goleta neighborhood after a fatal shootout occurred on Thursday afternoon. The suspect is still pending.
The Sheriff’s Office said it believed the suspect had fled the area before police arrived. The investigation is ongoing.

A suspect is on the loose after a fatal shootout in Goleta on Thursday afternoon.
The Santa Barbara County sheriff’s office is investigating the incident at Block 600 on Burtis Street in Goleta at 1 pm.
One person died and another victim was transported to the hospital with injuries.
A single suspect is pending and is considered armed and dangerous.
An air unit, K9, and patrol units looking for the suspect in the surrounding areas. Scanner traffic reports that the suspect is described as a man in his twenties, 5’10 “, wearing a gray shirt and baggy jeans.
An orderly shelter has been issued to Hollister Ave residents south of the cycle path, between Turnpike and Patterson.

One person is dead and another is transported to Cottage Hospital after being shot in a vehicle at 650 Burtis Street in Noleta. A suspect, described as a man in his twenties, 5 feet and 10, wearing a gray shirt and baggy jeans, was seen running from the scene around 12:45 pm. The sheriff and the CHP established a perimeter and requested air support for a search. A K-9 unit is also working.
