Serena Williams showed no signs of shoulder injury as she entered the second round of the Australian Open with a victory over German Laura Siegemund.
Wearing a brightly colored one-leg jumpsuit at Rod Laver Arena, the seven-time champion lost the opening game, but then swept Siegemund 6-1 6-1 in less than an hour.
The 39-year-old, who is in tenth place, withdrew from the semifinals of the tournament against Ash Barty, claiming the injury, but he did not appear to be hampered in the unilateral dispute.
In search of their 24th singles grand slam title, Williams will next face Serbian world number 99 Nina Stojanovic, who overcame Romanian Irina-Camelia Begu in two sets.

“It looks very uncomfortable, especially in the Melbourne heat,” another shared.
“It was a good start – vintage ‘Rena’,” Williams said in the post-match interview.
– I think I’m very good at controlling myself in a grand slam.
The American was eager to leave the court to watch the Super Bowl final and watch Tampa Bay’s legendary quarterback Tom Brady, 43, in action.
“I’m an American and we love the Super Bowl and Tom Brady is in my age group, so it’s exciting,” she said.
‘He is incredible – competing … at 43 is something new and is super inspiring for me at my young age of 30-something.’
