Senator Patrick Leahy, a Vermont Democrat set to preside over former President Donald Trump’s impeachment trial, was taken to a Washington hospital for review on Tuesday, his spokesman said.
“Tonight, Senator Leahy was in his Capitol office and was not feeling well,” said his spokesman David Carle in a written statement.
“He was examined at Capitol by the attending physician,” said Carle.
“As a precaution, the attending physician recommended that he be taken to a local hospital for observation, where he is now and where he is being assessed.”
Leahy, 80, is the pro tempore president of the Senate, which makes him responsible for presiding over that House in the absence of Vice President Kamala Harris.
Leahy’s status in the Senate also puts him third in the presidential succession line, after Harris and House of Representatives President Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif.
The House accused Trump earlier this month of inciting the riot by his supporters at the Capitol complex on January 6. Thousands of members of a crowd stormed the halls of Congress, smashing windows and searching offices.
Five people, including a Capitol police office, died as a result of the riot.
The crowd interrupted a joint session of Congress, which confirmed the election of Joe Biden as president.
