Selena honored with Grammy’s Lifetime Achievement Award

Selena Quintanilla Perez, known simply as Selena, will be posthumously honored with the Grammy award for her work as a whole.

The beloved singer Tejana was chosen as the Recording Academy Award winner in recognition of her remarkable achievements in the music industry. The life of the bilingual singer and music icon was interrupted 25 years ago, after she was murdered at the age of 23 by the fan club manager in 1995. The posthumous award will be presented at the 63rd Grammy Awards on January 31, 2021.

“As a creator and music lover, I am grateful that we can look back on our influences and see the impact they have had on our community. In a year when music has helped us to stay together, I look forward to honoring this iconic group. of music creators, “said Harvey Mason Jr., interim president and CEO of the Recording Academy, in a statement.

The singer’s official Twitter account posted a quote from her in honor of the achievement. “The goal is not to live forever, but to create something that …”, wrote the account.

This Grammy would not be the singer’s first. With her 1993 album, “Live”, Selena won the Best Mexican-American Album at the 36th Grammy Awards. This victory made her the first female artist from Tejano to win in the category. His album, “Dreaming of You”, would be released after his death and would sell over 170,000 copies on the first day of its release.

A quarter of a century later, Selena remains a prominent figure, especially for Latinos, even for the younger generations who only knew her music after her death. Netflix’s long-awaited show, “Selena: The Series,” debuted in December and chronicles not only her musical journey, but also her Latin family in search of a better life in the entertainment industry.

Others honored with the award for the work as a whole were Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five, Lionel Hampton, Marilyn Horne, Salt-N-Pepa and Talking Heads.
