The New Orleans Saints training team filled its final slot by hiring wide receiver Jake Lampman, a free agent who started his career in the NFL as a non-contracted rookie with Saints in 2016. He played at Ferris State in college and a half who recovered in the following years, spending time on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers training team in 2017 and appearing with the XFL’s Tampa Bay Vipers earlier this year. He auditioned for the Saints in August along with a few other players.
This is not the help that Saints fans have been asking for. Although he has played on his system before, so do more talented NFL veterans, like Kenny Stills, who could offer more in the future. The chances of Lampman being a better option than Stills or training squad receivers like Lil’Jordan Humphrey and Austin Carr are minimal.
Still, beggars cannot choose. And the saints are getting very scarce in the reception corps with Michael Thomas, Deonte Harris, Bennie Fowler and Marquez Callaway on the wounded reserve, although Callaway was recently assigned to practice again. His relaxed attitude towards a fantastic and new recruit Pro Bowler, Justin Jefferson, can haunt the team for many years. They really should have been more aggressive in attacking him on draft day.
