Sales of the Apple iPhone 12 decline as smaller smartphones lose their appeal – report

(Reuters) – Sales of Apple’s iPhone 12 mini in the United States accounted for just 5% of overall sales of its new phones during the first half of January, industry data provider Counterpoint said on Tuesday, adding signs of demand silent by the new smaller version of your primary device.

Smartphone users have switched to larger devices in recent years as they devour more video content on the go and get excited about visually rich social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Tiktok and Snapchat.

JP Morgan analyst William Yang said in a statement last week that weak demand for the small iPhone 12 and 12 could lead Apple to halt production of the mini in the second quarter.

“The adjustment of the product mix is well expected by investors and should not be a negative surprise,” added Yang.

Apple was not immediately available for comment.

The company launched a smaller variant of the iPhone 12 model last year, but demand for smaller smartphones appears to be weaker, compared to the next-generation iPhone 12 Pros and the old iPhone 11s.

“This is in line with what we are seeing in the broader global market, where screens below 6.0” now account for about 10% of all smartphones sold, “said analyst Tom Kang of Counterpoint.

Apple shipped its iPhone 12 line several weeks later than usual last year, but more models and a new look exploited the pent-up demand for updates, especially in China.

Last month, the Cupertino, Calif.-Based company posted $ 65.60 billion in quarterly revenue from its iPhones business, breaking a record it set three years ago.
