Rust Foundation established to manage the Rust programming language

SCHEDULE -

Mozilla has been sponsoring the Rust programming language for more than a decade, while in 2020, as part of Mozilla’s big round of layoffs, most of the Rust team was released with the withdrawal of the Servo web engine team. Then plans were made to create the Rust Foundation as an independent entity.

This nonprofit organization to manage the Rust programming language ecosystem is now functioning with its first board meeting scheduled for this week. The initial Board of Directors of the Rust Foundation includes directors of the founding member companies of AWS, Huawei, Microsoft, Google and Mozilla. There are also five project leadership directors.

These founding member companies will sponsor Rust’s work. Mozilla transferred the trademark and all infrastructure assets (including the Crates.io repository) to the Rust Foundation.

More details on forming the Rust Foundation to move Rust forward can be found at foundation.rust-lang.org.
