Ronnie Spector remembers ‘brilliant producer’ and ‘lousy husband’

Ronnie Spector, the teenage protégé who became Phil Spector’s ex-wife, spoke after his death on Sunday, calling him “a brilliant producer, but a bad husband”.

In an Instagram post, the 77-year-old Ronettes singer said, “It’s a sad day for music and a sad day for me.”

“When I was working with Phil Spector, watching him create in the recording studio, I knew I was working with the best. He was in complete control, driving everyone. So much to love in those days. Meeting him and falling in love was like a fairy tale. The magical music that we managed to make together was inspired by our love. I loved him madly and gave him my heart and soul. “

The “Be My Baby” singer, who spoke in depth about the abuse and revenge she suffered at the hands of her ex-husband before and after the 1974 divorce, also mentioned the difficult times.

“As I said many times while he was alive, he was a brilliant producer, but a terrible husband. Unfortunately, Phil was unable to live and work outside the recording studio. Darkness settled in, many lives were damaged. I still smile whenever I hear the song we did together, and I always will. The music will be forever. Phil Spector 1939-2021, ”she wrote.

Ronnie, who has been married to Phil for six years, has accused him of pointing a gun at her, forcing her to sign a divorce agreement that allegedly cut her from future record earnings, and even lobbying at Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for not inducing it.

She also stated that he kept a gold coffin in the basement and said that he would kill her and put her in it if she tried to leave him.

The couple’s three adopted children also said they suffered abuse at the hands of the late erratic music producer.

Born Veronica Bennett in Spanish Harlem, she met a native of the Bronx when she was 18 years old. Passionate about her voice, the producer quickly transformed her into the glamorous and rebellious singer who broke the charts nine times in the 1960s.

The couple married in 1968 and divorced in 1974, three decades before Phil murdered actress Lana Clarkson.
