During his time as the 49ers’ defensive coordinator, Robert Saleh was known as a popular coach among his players. Now that he is the head coach of the Jets, Saleh can become even more popular when his players hear what his top priorities are.
Saleh said he considers helping players win big contracts one of his most important roles as a coach.
“I believe that coaches and players are in this together,” said Saleh, through the New York Post. “Players want two things from a coach. First, they want to know that you care about their well-being. As a coach, you make a personal investment in people. And two: you can help them make enough moves on Sundays to get as much money as possible. “
Saleh said he considers it a joy when a player he helped develop wins a big second contract.
“You have to put yourself in the players’ shoes,” said Saleh. “They are called up. They need a personal investment so that they can reach the second contract and be rewarded. Players should expect this from their coaches and organizations. It is no different in the business world: enter the entry level, work hard and be rewarded. It’s the same mentality in football. The players are human. Make sure that they understand that you want what they want: get them where they want to go. “
