Like many people, I gained weight during the block. Not only did I give in to the comforting and stressful food, I also stopped exercising. In addition to those extra pounds, I also became increasingly slower and taciturn as world events continued to depress me. Last October, I was browsing without thinking about Instagram when I saw an ad for Future, an app that offered individual remote personal trainers. Intrigued, I signed up for a free trial. Now I have been with him for several months and, although I haven’t exactly lost a ton of weight, I feel much better than before. It costs a lot of money ($ 150 a month), but I think I finally found a fitness solution that works for me.

I’ve always had a love-hate relationship with exercise. Mostly hate. I’ve tried going to the gym several times, but it never worked. Group classes scare me and I am usually intimidated by machines and weights. The only time I exercised regularly was when I had personal trainers, who not only held me responsible, but also mixed my exercises so that I never got bored.

Unfortunately, personal trainers are expensive, so I interrupted those sessions as well. I also chose to cancel my gym membership to save even more money. Instead, I invested in a Peloton (I know, this seems counterintuitive, but paying for the bike on an installment plan was cheaper than my gym fees). This worked for a while, but even then, I couldn’t force myself to get on the bike regularly. It seemed to me that my biggest obstacle to exercise was not just motivation, but responsibility.

That was why I was initially attracted to the future. After I signed up, I was asked to choose a personal trainer. The application offers a variety of options with a short bio for each person. I decided on Ashley, mainly because she and I share a alma mater. Shortly after, she contacted me through the app and we set up a FaceTime video call to review the plan. Then, during the video call, I presented my goals along with a list of various injuries that can make certain exercises more difficult than others. In turn, she wanted to know what kind of equipment I had at home so that she could send me the right training. I told her I had dumbbells, a yoga mat, a foam roller and a Peloton bike, and she said it was okay to start.

A good advantage of the Futuro service is that each member receives an Apple Watch Series 3 as a loan for the duration of their subscription. You would make a $ 200 deposit, which you would get back if you decide to cancel. Alternatively, you can pay the difference between the deposit and the retail price of the watch to buy it immediately.

The reason Future offers the Apple Watch is because this is the primary way in which Future coaches control whether you are exercising and how you are doing. I already had an Apple Watch Series 5, so I chose not to receive the offer.

After the call, Ashley started sending me exercise routines through the app. A typical training session would include a brief warm-up followed by several minutes of exercise and stretching or foam rollers. Each routine has an accompanying video instruction, as well as a pre-recorded voice guide. From time to time, Ashley added some verbal encouragement or some tips on how to keep fit. After each workout, Ashley can see my heart rate levels (thanks, Apple Watch), and I have the option to leave some feedback on how I think it went.

It was a little difficult at first. I was unable to do some of the workouts she designated (jumping jacks were a little difficult due to plantar fasciitis, for example) and the routines sometimes lasted almost an hour, which was a little too much for me. After some discussion, she agreed to shorten the routines to about 30 minutes, but to have more during the week (so instead of three times a week, it would be four). She also modified the exercises to better suit my needs, like knee crunches instead of regular ones and a general emphasis on low impact exercises that are much better for the mentioned plantar fasciitis.

In addition, Ashley constantly texted me, either to remind me of my workouts or to ask me why I skipped a certain day. There were days when, despite feeling exhausted, I was still trying to exercise because I didn’t want Ashley to blame me the next morning.

After a while, I started working out almost every day. (She ended up increasing the routine to five days a week.) In fact, I started to like it, so much so that I bought more exercise equipment (I bought a suspension trainer and a kettlebell) and asked Ashley to incorporate it into the routine. that I would have more variety. She agreed, and I am currently very pleased with the variety of exercises.

What I also like about the Future system is that I can work out whenever I want, according to my own schedule. Also, if I decide to take a group class or add some aerobic exercise to my routine, I can just add that without Ashley having to assign it.

Of course, no matter how good I think the future is, nothing compares to having a personal trainer who can adapt to your workouts right away. I still have to count my own repetitions and make sure my shape is correct on my own. But at times like this, when personal contact with strangers is a bad idea, a solution like Future’s might be the best option.
